Writing a CV

It seems like such an easy thing to do, but never under-estimate the importance of a good CV. The basic rules are – keep the wording and the layout simple, keep the wording clear and concise, keep the layout clean and pleasant on the eye.

CV’s should be 2 to 3 pages long and no more. You should use a basic font such as Arial, Times or Tahoma. Below is a checklist of things to include on your CV. Also, here is an example of a CV in word format that you can feel free to use and insert your own information:

Personal Information

This section should include: Name, Address, Phone, Mobile, Email, Gender, Marital Status, Driving License, Nationality, Date of Birth, Age.

Profile

This section should include a brief overview of you, your aims, objectives, goals and ambitions. Sell yourself and include your achievements and strengths. Try to keep this concise, maybe 4 to 6 sentences maximum. Check out the Example CV for more information.

Employment History

This section should include details about your job history. Include all information about your current and past 10 years’ roles that may be relevant to a future employer, keeping descriptions concise and clear. Detailed descriptions of jobs should include: what you were selling; how much new business and account management you were doing; customer base; targets; achievements; and cover your last 10 years of employment. Prior to that you only need to include company and job title. However, if you feel you had a position 15 years ago that is particularly relevant to your current application, please feel free to include a few brief details on it.

Education

This section should include brief details of your School, College and University qualifications and the names of the establishments you attended. You do not need to include your grades or even the subjects you took prior to University. Check out the Example CV for more information.

Further Qualifications, Certificates and Skills

This section should include all qualifications, certificates and skills that you think may be relevant to any future employer – this may include training courses with previous or current employers.

Interests

This section should include a brief overview of your interests. Include things such as sports and hobbies. This section should only be a couple of sentences long. Check out the Example CV for more information.

References

This section should include references from two of your most recent employers.
